Position Summary: The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library is seeking two entrepreneurial, collaborative, innovative, self-starting and intellectually curious individuals to serve as either the Bioengineering and Engineering Medical Innovation Librarian or the Medical & Biomedicine Librarian. These positions liaise with the Carle Illinois College of Medicine and Grainger College of Engineering Bioengineering department. Reporting to the Head of Grainger Engineering Library Information Center (GELIC), the two positions will work in collaboration to advance services, initiatives, and partnerships as determined by the UIUC University Library and GELIC strategic goals. The Bioengineering and Engineering Medical Innovation Librarian focusses on technology and innovation in medicine. The successful candidate will engage with faculty, staff, researchers, and students affiliated with Carle Illinois College of Medicine and the Grainger College of Engineering Bioengineering department through instruction, research translation (bench to bedside to curbside), clinical librarianship practice, reference and consultations, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, medical and biomedical informatics, scholarly communication and data management. The Bioengineering and Engineering Medical Innovation Librarian will conduct research and publication to extend the library and information science body of knowledge.
Responsibilities
- Build relationships with the faculty and medical students of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, and the faculty and undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students of Grainger College of Engineering Bioengineering department.
- Build relationships with the faculty and medical students of the Grainger College of Engineering Bioengineering department and the Carle Illinois College of Medicine to customize curricular innovations that support student success (within a course/clerkship or outside of a course/clerkship) through experiential learning and partner with faculty on research projects and proposals.
- Develop innovative services and outreach to Grainger College of Engineering Department of Bioengineering and Carle Illinois College of Medicine based upon relationships and needs assessments that meet articulated and unstated needs of the stakeholders, identify trends and changes in that discipline, and innovate new services, outreach and instruction in order to improve research, clinical, and educational outcomes.
- Provide support for evidence-based practice and research.
- Consult with stakeholders to improve research through the implementation of best practices in supporting medical technology, innovation, and product development.
- Participate in initiatives of the Grainger Engineering Library Information Center.
- Maintain an active research pipeline that advances the discipline of library and information science.
- Participate in service to the profession via both internal and external opportunities.
- Contribute to the national and international reputation of the University Library through professional research, service and collaboration with national colleagues, organizations, and consortia.
Qualifications
Required:
- Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or PhD in a life science or engineering discipline.
- Demonstrated experience creating and providing instruction.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with diverse groups and populations.
- Evidence of the ability to conduct scholarly research and work to meet the requirements for promotion and tenure.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly in person and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and to work collaboratively and effectively with others in a team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and participate in collaborative endeavors.
Preferred:
- Demonstrated experience providing library support to medical and/or engineering disciplines in an academic or clinical setting.
- Demonstrated experience providing reference or research support services in an academic library setting.
- Demonstrated experience in the foundational concepts and services of research data management.
- Demonstrated experience creating and providing instructional interventions for the medical and/or engineering disciplines.
- Demonstrated experience conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
- Undergraduate or advanced degree in a life science or engineering discipline
The Medical and Biomedicine Librarian will engage with faculty, staff, researchers, and students affiliated with Carle Illinois College of Medicine through instruction, research translation (bench to bedside to curbside), collection development, reference and consultations, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, scholarly communication, and data management. The Medical and Biomedicine Librarian will conduct research and publication to extend the library and information science body of knowledge.
Responsibilities
- Build relationships with the faculty, staff, and medical students of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine to customize curricular innovations that support student success (within a course/clerkship or outside of a course/clerkship) through experiential learning and partner with faculty on research projects and proposals.
- Develop services and outreach to Carle Illinois College of Medicine based upon relationships and needs assessments that meet articulated and unstated needs of the stakeholders, identify trends and changes in that discipline, and innovate new services, outreach, and instruction in order to improve research, clinical, and educational outcomes.
- Oversee the development of the collection for the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, in cooperation with other subject specialist liaisons to the life sciences, behavioral science, engineering, and veterinary medicine, with particular emphasis on the Carle Illinois Virtual Library (CIVL).
- Provide instruction based upon pedagogical best practices and innovations that reflect the needs of the profession, including instruction on how to search for clinical guidelines and related materials that promote evidence-based clinical care.
- Consult with stakeholders to improve research through the implementation of best practices through evidence-based research and other innovative research services.

The Physical Sciences and Engineering Division of the University Library is currently home (division-wide) to 8 faculty librarians (including this position), 13 staff, and 4.25 FTE graduate assistants from the School of Information Sciences. Served by the Grainger Engineering Library Information Center and the other PSED Libraries, the Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois is home to more than 9,000 undergraduates, 3,400 graduates and 430 faculty involved in more than 2,000 research projects totaling $239 million in research expenditures for FY 2017. Salary and Rank: The minimum salary is $65,000 for these positions and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The University of Illinois Library is committed to competitive salaries and attending to equity in compensation within the organization.

Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 11 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
